Design of a contemporary farm worker’s dwelling and farm office within the South Downs National Park, in collaboration with a planning team and a landscape consultant. Various locations for an additional dwelling to enable a farm worked to live on the farm reasonably close to the cattle were considered to ensure the optimum site was chosen. The aim was to provide sufficient privacy for the occupant, while minimising intervention in the landscape and avoiding impact on existing trees and hedgerows.

The dwelling has been designed to provide modern and comfortable accommodation, which allows the occupant to enjoy the setting and a sense of separation. The new farm office, forming part of the footprint of the new house, will provide self-sufficient accommodation for two workers and can be used for essential storage of equipment as well as an office space, a utility room and WC/shower facilities.

Alterations and extension to the grade II dwelling house to separate it from the community shop and post office and in doing so, save a community asset.

The proposals set out to enhance accommodation formerly linked to the village shop and also improve the shop front for the benefit of the community as well as visitors. This involved removing harmful alterations and additions to the listed building and making the necessary repairs to historic features.

Planning and listed building consent were granted in October 2019 and associated conditions were discharged in February 2020.

These images show the rear of the property before and after the project, as well as the new interior accommodation and some of the shop’s community team.

In addition, access to the rear of the village hall was improved to provide a grass-crete drive and an access ramp into the existing rear door.

The scheme respected the existing building’s rural location and surroundings with a traditional and in-keeping design.

Restoration works to the pavilion and lean-to building to extend the tearooms, with careful detailing to attend to issues of overheating in the summer and leaks in the winter.

Work involved developing an appropriate roof covering to retain the rhythm of the glazing bars and the ambience of the historic glass houses within the grade II listed park.

A further phase of work to reinstate the east pavilion and repair the east range of lean-to glass houses to provide educational facilities for its many visitors is about to be implemented.

We acquired all the consents for the first phase of construction and the second round planning and listed building consents.

As part of an ongoing relationship with our client, we worked with them to develop a scheme to completely transform this grade II listed inn, obtaining planning and listed building consent that included additional accommodation in the grounds and South Downs National Park. Technical assistance was also provided during the build.

The inn re-opened in December 2018, with the additional accommodation building completed in February 2019.

The project was a 2019 Sussex Heritage Trust award winner in the commercial category.
